Wilson squads compete through busy weekend

The Wilson Tigers and Lady Tigers faced a challenging twoday slate over the weekend, battling strong competition from McLain on Friday before taking on Preston on Saturday. Despite coming up short in the win column, both Wilson squads showed determination, depth and competitive effort across all four games.

— Wilson falls to McLain, 64-56 Wilson opened the weekend Friday with a hard-fought loss to McLain, 64-56. Ke’shon Shelburn led the Tigers with 19 points while also contributing nine rebounds and eight assists.

After trailing 2-0, McLain used an 8-0 run to gain early momentum. Wilson responded and played one of its best stretches in the third quarter, outscoring McLain 17-11 while recording five assists in the period. The game tightened late, but McLain sealed the outcome with a decisive 9-2 run after holding a narrow 55-54 advantage.

Wilson was effective in the paint, shooting 22-of-43 on twopoint attempts and controlling the boards with 31 rebounds. The Tigers also moved the ball well, finishing with 15 assists on 25 made baskets, and added three blocked shots defensively.

• Aiden Barnard: 2 points – Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers stayed within striking distance throughout Friday’s contest but ultimately fell to McLain, 53-47.

— Wilson drops series against county-rival Preston Saturday’s boys matchup featured nine lead changes before Preston pulled away in the second half for a 63-48 victory.

Ke’shon Shelburn turned in a dominant performance, scoring 23 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. The game was tied 26-26 at halftime, and Wilson controlled the second quarter, outscoring Preston 16-11.

Momentum shifted early in the third quarter when Preston went on a 12-2 run after leading 29-26. Wilson finished with 35 rebounds and 11 assists on 19 made baskets. Alec Ganote hit two three-pointers, while Shelburn again led the team in assists with six.

Preston found success inside, shooting 16-of-26 on two-point attempts, and added timely perimeter shooting to extend the lead.

• Rickey Hinson: 2 points – The Lady Tigers wrapped up the weekend with a tight contest Saturday, falling 58-55 to Preston after leading in the first quarter.

Wilson stayed competitive throughout and kept the game within reach into the final period before Preston edged away late.
