Tigers remain perfect after weekend sweep
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Wilson Tiger varsity basketball program remained perfect on the season this past weekend with a pair of double-digit victories.

The Tigers, who entered last weekend ranked 7th in Class B and sitting on a spotless 17-0 record, began last the 2-game sweep last Friday with a 73-24 thrashing of the visiting Wetumka Chieftains at the Tiger Den. The Wilson gentlemen then traveled to Glenpool on Saturday to square off against the Class 4A powerhouse Glenpool Warriors, leaving the Tulsa County school with a 70-51 decision and their 19th-straight season victory.

The Wilson gentlemen were back in action Tuesday with a trip to Mason to battle former Wilson coach Vernie Thomas and the host Mason Eagles and are scheduled to travel to Harrah Thursday and Butner Friday before closing out their regular-season schedule next Tuesday at Oktaha.

In last Friday’s home meeting with Wetumka, the Tigers led 20-8 after one and 33-16 at halftime. The Wilson gentlemen put the game further away (5620) in the third quarter with a 23-4 advantage, then capped off the decisive 73-24 victory with a 17-4 margin in the final frame.

Other Tigers to reach double figures in the home win were Keshon Shelburn with 12, Zion Shelburn 11, and Zabrien Shelburn 10. In Saturday’s road win at Glenpool, the Wilson gentlemen came out of the opening frame with an 18-10 advantage, then went into the halftime break with a 35-26 lead following a narrow 17-16 margin in the second stanza. The Tigers pushed their lead to double digits – 61-32 – after outscoring the host Warriors 26-6 in the third period.

Glenpool finished the final quarter with a 19-9 advantage, but it was the visiting Wilson Tigers that walked away with the 70-51 victory and their perfect season intact.
