American author of children’s books Harriet Ziefert celebrates July 7, 1941, as her birth date in North Bergen, N.J. This is where she grew up in the school system there, graduated from Smith College and later received her Masters Degree in Education from New York University.
Harriet writes picture books and easyto- read books with 75 or less words so first graders can read them. She has written several hundred children’s books. She is also founder and publisher of Blue Apple Books and publishing house for children’s books.
Former first lady Barbara Bush chose ten books she would read aloud in her program promoting reading, and she chose “A New Coat For Anna” published by Harriet in 1986 as one of the ten.
Harriet lives in Maplewood, N.J. and Lincoln, Mass. She has two grown sons.
