The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team began their journey towards a third-straight state tournament appearance this past Saturday at Wiley Ryal Field in Dewar.

The Dragons opened the 2023 campaign with an 8-0 victory over the Porter Pirates, then improved to 2-0 on the day with an 11-0 thrashing of the Weleetka Outlaws in the nightcap.

The Dewar diamond squad was back in action Monday at Depew and Tuesday at home against Allen.

In Saturday’s season opener against Porter, the Dragons got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Jeron Brison drove a 1-2 pitch over the right-field wall for a 2-run home run.

The Dewar squad added a run in each of the third and fourth innings, then ended the contest on the run rule with four runs in the last of the fifth for the 8-0 decision.

Aiden Tomlinson went the distance on the mound for the Dragons to earn the pitching win. Tomlinson struck out 13 and walked two in the one-hit, complete-game victory.

Brison added an RBI walk in the 4-run fifth to finish with 3 RBIs in the contest.

Christian Cargola and Ashton Hawkins were the top hitters for the Dragons with each going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.

Besides Brison’s 2-run blast in the first, the other Dewar base hits against Porter came on RBI singles by Tryton Mack and Jonathan Wilson and a 2-run single by Zack Mullen.

In Saturday’s shutout of Weleetka, the Dragons opened the scoring with four runs in the home half of the first, then added a run in the second and six in the third for an 11-0 advantage after three innings of action.

The Dewar defense kept the Outlaws off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to put the finishing touches on the Dragons’ 11-0, run-rule, victory.

Zack Mullen struck out seven and walked two without allowing a base hit in four innings of work to earn the pitching win for Dewar.

Jeron Brison was the top hitter for the Dragons against Weleetka, going 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and 2 RBIs.

Jaden Maxwell also had a multi-hit game for Dewar in the shutout win, finishing 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and an RBI.

The other base hits for the Dragons against Weleetka came on 2-run singles by Mullen, Ashton Hawkins, and Skelly Taylor.
