Morris splits recent roundball action

The MHS cage squads began the week with a trip to Eufaula for a showdown with the Eufaula Ironheads and Lady Ironheads, then returned home Tuesday to host the Stigler Panthers and Lady Panthers.

The Lady Eagles, ranked 11th in Class 3A, came away with a pair of double-digit victories in their two roundball contests, defeating Eufaula 57-43 and Stigler 68-40, while the Eagles found themselves on the losing end of a pair of decisions, falling by a 60-57 margin Monday in Eufaula and suffering a 55-34 setback to Stiger on Tuesday.

The Morris cage squads will return to action Friday with a trip to Kellyville for the regular-season finale. Friday’s roundball action in Kellyville is scheduled to begin with the girls game at 6 p.m. followed by the boys contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.

In Monday’s girls game at Eufaula, the Lady Eagles came out of the opening frame with a 15-7 advantage, then edged the host Lady Ironheads 19-18 in the second stanza for a 34-25 halftime lead.

Eufaula cut the Morris lead to six, 43-37, with eight minutes remaining in regulation after taking the third quarter by a 12-9 margin.

The Lady Eagles thwarted any comeback attempt in the final period with a 14-6 advantage to walk off the Eufaula gym floor with the 57-43 victory and sweep the season series with the Lady Ironheads.

The Morris offensive output on Monday was led by the duo of Skylar Phillips and Kaleah Barnett with 14 points each. Maddie Moore also reached double figures for the Lady Eagles at Eufaula, finishing with 11 points.

Other Morris scorers on Monday included Reagan Bowling with six, Taylon Ray five, Marti Yaerger three, and Emma Duclos and Jessica Wilson two each.

In Monday’s boys contest at Eufaula, the Eagles trailed 13-7 after the first eight minutes of action and went into the halftime break down nine, 29-20, following a 16-13 deficit in the second stanza.

Eufaula’s lead reached 10 points (3929) after the host Ironheads came of the third quarter with a narrow 10-9 advantage.

In the final frame, the Eagles attempted to overcome the double-digit deficit, lighting up the scoreboard for 28 points. Eufaula countered with 21 points in the period to hand the Morris gentlemen the 60-57 setback.

Race Casey and Cody Smith led the way offensively for Morris against Eufaula, finishing with 18 points apiece. Jerrick Raines was next for the Eagles with eight, followed by Tucker Kelsey with seven, Ryan Benavidez four, and Xavier Harjo two.

In Tuesday’s girls home battle with get their offense going in the 4-quarter battle, being outscored in each frame.

Strother took the opening period by a 14-4 margin, then led 24-9 at halftime after doubling up on the Dewar ladies 10-5 in the second stanza.

The host Lady Yellowjackets, who are coached by former Henryetta coach Kolby Johnson, took the final two frames by margins of 16-7 and 11-0, respectively, to hand the Lady Dragons the 51-16 setback.

Melanie Burney was tops for Dewar with seven points, followed by Bre Harvell with three. The trio of Ally Burney, Sommer Bess, and Maikya Carter rounded out the Lady Dragon scoring on Tuesday with two points apiece.

In Tuesday’s boys showdown with Strother, the Dragons emerged from the first eight minutes of action with a 15-11 advantage, then edged the host Yellowjackets 10-9 in the second frame for a 24-20 lead at the halftime break.

Dewar took the third quarter by a 17-10 margin to extend its lead to double digits - 41-30 - with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Strother attempted a fourth-quarter comeback, putting up 17 points in the final period, but the Dewar cage squad countered with 13 points in the frame to walk away with the 56-53 victory.

Ishmael Stewart led a trio of double-digit scorers for the victorious Dragons with 14 points. Stewart was joined in double figures by Jeron Brison and Cole Miller with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Tryton Mack was next in the scoring column for Dewar with eight, followed by John Rex with four, Skelly Taylor three, and Seth Hudson two.
