An 8-team tournament to determine a high school basketball champion in the state of Oklahoma has taken place for more than 100 years with the first boys basketball state tournament being held in 1918 and the first girls basketball state tournament taking place one year later in 1919.
An 8-team tournament to determine a high school basketball champion in the state of Oklahoma has taken place for more than 100 years with the first boys basketball state tournament being held in 1918 and the first girls basketball state tournament taking place one year later in 1919.
Despite Classes 2A-6A having their state tournament cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Oklahoma has crowned a state champion in boys basketball for 103 years and girls basketball for 102 years. (Editor’s Note: Classes A and B completed state tournaments in 2020 before the cancellations occurred.)
Okmulgee County had its very first state tournament representatives in 1925 when the Henryetta boys and Preston girls basketball teams qualified for the Big Dance.
The Knights, known as the Fighting Hens before a name change in 1989, saw their inaugural state tournament appearance end in the first round with a loss to Gould High School, while the Lady Pirates reached the semifinals in 1925 before falling to eventual state champion Mangum.
Beginning with the appearances by the Henryetta boys and Preston girls in 1925, the eight Okmulgee County high schools have sent a total of 150 teams to the state basketball tournament. In those 150 appearances, there have been two teams (Henryetta girls, Wilson girls) that have never had the opportunity to play at a state tournament.
The county cage squads have competed in a total of 256 games in the past 96 years and have an overall record of 131-125. The overall state tournament record includes four teams going winless in their state tournament appearances - Dewar Lady Dragons (0- 3), Morris Eagles (0-3), Schulter Bulldogs (0-2), and Wilson Tigers (0-1).
Okmulgee County has had a total of 37 teams compete for the state championship with the first team playing for the Gold Ball being the Preston Pirates in 1938, falling to Victory (Olustee) in the Class C title game by a 37-33 margin. The first girls basketball team from Okmulgee County to compete for a state championship was the Morris Lady Eagles in 1964, falling to Wakita 53-42 in the Class B title game.
Two years later (1966), the Lady Eagles, who were coached by Bill Self Sr. (father of Kansas University men’s basketball coach Bill Self Jr.), became the first county cage squad to hoist the Gold Ball, defeating Sterling 66-58 in the Class B championship game. The championship was the first of two-straight for the Morris ladies, who defeated Thomas 53-51 for the 1967 Class B crown.
The Okmulgee Bulldogs became the first boys basketball team in Okmulgee County to capture a state championship, defeating Classen 79-52 in the 1970 Class 3A title contest. Just like the Lady Eagles in 1966 and 1967, the championship win for the Bulldogs in 1970 was the first of two-consecutive Gold Balls by the Okmulgee gentlemen, who defeated Ada 56-47 in the 1971 Class 3A title game.
Preston has competed for a combined total of 20 state championships (10 each for boys and girls), followed by Okmulgee with seven (six boys, one girls), Beggs six (all boys), Morris three (all girls), and Dewar one (boys).
Of the 37 state finalist teams, twenty-three have hoisted the Gold Ball (Beggs boys - 1977, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994; Okmulgee girls - 1991; Okmulgee boys - 1970, 1971, 1987; Morris girls - 1966, 1967; Preston girls - 1988, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2006, 2009, 2014; Preston boys - 1982, 1986, 1989, 1991, 2009) with the latest being the Preston Lady Pirates in 2014.
Preston holds the record for state basketball championships with a combined 12 Gold Balls. Beggs is next with five, followed by Okmulgee with four and Morris two.
The 14 state runner-up trophies have been awarded to the Beggs Golden Demons in 2021, Dewar Dragons in 1970, Morris Lady Eagles in 1964, Okmulgee Bulldogs in 1950, 1969, 1991, Preston Lady Pirates in 1999, 2007, 2015 and the Preston Pirates in 1938, 1943, 2011, 2015, 2016.
In the last 96 years, there have been just three times where both varsity basketball teams played for the Gold Ball in the same season. Preston sent both teams to the state championship games in 2009 and 2015, respectively, while Okmulgee is the only other county school to have both teams represented in the state title game, qualifying both teams in 1991.
Prior to the 2018-19 season, Okmulgee County had at least one representative at the state basktball tournament for 38-straight seasons.
In 2019, the 38-year streak was snapped when the Preston Lady Pirates came up one win shy of a state tournament berth.
The 2019-20 campaign also saw no county cage squads punch their ticket to the Big Dance (most of the 2020 state basketball tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The Beggs Golden Demons ended the 2-year absence in 2021 by defeating Hugo 62-51 in the Class 3A area championship. The area championship also snapped one other streak - a 19-year absences in the state tournament for the Demons, who had not reached the Big Dance since 2002 under legendary head coach Henry Roland.
Besides the girls teams from Henryetta and Wilson having not competed at the state tournament, the longest state tournament appearance drought belongs to the Henryetta Golden Knights - a streak of 61 years. The Schulter Bulldogs are next on the list at 52 years, followed by the Dewar Dragons at 39 years and the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs at 30 years.
The Beggs Golden Demons were tied for fifth with the Wilson Tigers on the list at 19 years before making an appearance at the 2021 state tournament. The 2021 appearance at the Big Dance by the Demons now puts the Tigers alone at No. 5, followed by the Schulter Lady Bulldogs in the No. 6 spot at 15 years.
The Morris Eagles are seventh on the list at 13 years, followed by the Morris Lady Eagles in eighth at 10 years.
