American author of fantasy literature Patricia Wrede celebrates her birthday on March 27. She was born in 1953 in Chicago.
The oldest of five children in her family (four girls and one boy), she grew up surround by books, as all her family loved to read. Her favorites were The OZ books and “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and she started writing her own stories in seventh grade.
Patricia graduated from high school in 1970 and attended Carleton College in Minnesota, receiving a B.A. in Biology in 1974. She went on to the University of Minnesota to get her M.B.A. in 1977.
Patricia married James M. Wrede in 1976. Her first novel, “Shadow Magic,” was published in 1982, and by 1985, she quit her job as a financial analyst to write full-time. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1991. The couple had no children, and Patricia currently lives in Minneapolis with her cat, Karma. She has four nieces and nephews.
Patricia is a vegetarian, and her hobbies include sewing, embroidery, chocolate and reading.
She is a founding member of the Interstate Writer’s Workshop, also known as The Scribblies. She spent five extremely creative years with this group. Patricia is well-known for her Enchanted Forest Chronicles series for young adults, which was voted #84 in NPR’s 100 Best-Ever Teen Novels list.
We have one of her (YAF) books, “Searching for Dragons.”
