Eagles fall to Sperry despite early effort
By PATRICK FORD Editor,

The Morris Eagles showed flashes of offensive production Tuesday, but a combination of timely hitting and disciplined plate appearances by the Sperry Pirates proved too much to overcome in an 18-2 loss.

Sperry wasted little time setting the tone, striking in the opening inning. Bentley Woodard tripled to center field to spark the rally, and a pair of Morris miscues along with a sacrifice fly by Cuda Asher helped the Pirates take an early 3-0 advantage.

The Pirates continued to apply pressure in the third inning, capitalizing on defensive errors and a walk to extend their lead. Morris struggled to slow the momentum as Sperry’s aggressive baserunning and patient approach at the plate kept innings alive.

The game broke open in the sixth inning when Sperry plated eight runs on just two hits, taking full advantage of walks and defensive lapses. Jake Blaylock, Houston Asher and Cuda Asher each drew bases-loaded walks to force in runs, while Isaac Sherrill delivered a two-run single and Dom Patton added another RBI knock to cap the inning.

Morris starter Jake Hurt battled through five innings, allowing 10 runs (five earned) on seven hits while walking four. Despite the tough outing, the Eagles’ defense behind him struggled at times, contributing to several unearned runs.

Offensively, Morris managed seven hits on the day. Emmett Mote led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dayton Andrews and Rowan Ramirez also turned in strong performances, each collecting two hits to pace the lineup.

Sperry allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out five and issuing just one walk.

The Pirates finished with nine hits but did most of their damage through patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks and stealing nine bases. Woodard and Houston Asher each swiped multiple bags, keeping constant pressure on the Morris defense.

Sherrill, Braxton Kirkendoll and Houston Asher each recorded two hits for Sperry, while Kirkendoll, Houston Asher and Cuda Asher drove in two runs apiece. Defensively, the Pirates were flawless, committing no errors, with Blaylock leading the way with six fielding chances.

Despite the loss, Morris showed resilience at the plate with multiple hitters producing, but defensive miscues and free passes proved costly against a disciplined Sperry squad.
