Henryetta track meets cancelled as stadium construction begins
By PATRICK FORD Editor,

A season of anticipation has taken an unexpected turn for Henryetta track and field athletes, as officials have announced the cancellation of all scheduled home meets due to the start of construction on a new track and football stadium.

According to information released on ohstrack.com by Henryetta Track/Cross-Country Head Coach Tim Gillispie, the decision comes as work is set to begin the week of March 23 on a long-awaited facility upgrade that will ultimately enhance the experience for both athletes and spectators.

The cancellations include three meets that were slated to bring student-athletes from across the region to Henryetta:

• Middle School Meet – March 24

• High School Meet – March 27

• Elementary Meet – April 22 While the cancellations are disappointing for competitors eager to perform on their home track, the construction marks a significant investment in the future of Henryetta athletics.

Plans for the new facility include an upgraded 8-lane track, improved runways for jumping events, a redesigned shot put and discus area, and new grandstands to better accommodate fans. The project reflects a commitment to providing top-tier amenities for student-athletes and enhancing the community’s ability to host events in the years ahead.

Gillispie expressed optimism about what lies ahead, noting that while this season will be impacted locally, the long-term benefits will be substantial.

“We look forward to resuming on a new eight-lane track, runways for jumps, new shot and disc area and grandstands for spectators for the 2027 track season,” Gillispie said.

In the meantime, Henryetta athletes are expected to compete at meets hosted by other schools throughout the season, ensuring they still have opportunities to showcase their talents and continue development.

Though the absence of home meets will be felt this spring, the construction signals progress and growth. When the dust settles, Henryetta will be equipped with a modern facility designed to serve generations of athletes – turning today’s temporary setback into tomorrow’s lasting success.
