In the aftermath of a deadly EF3 tornado that tore through Beggs, neighboring communities are stepping up to help those affected, proving the strength and unity of small-town Oklahoma.
The storm caused significant damage throughout the community, including the Beggs Public Schools, and claimed the lives of two residents, identified by family members as Becky and Todd McClellan.
Motivated by the devastation close to home, Beggs resident, Mary Putman organized a community fundraiser to support re- covery efforts. Putman, who lives just a few hundred yards from the Beggs schools damaged in the storm, said the tragedy left a lasting impact.
“We decided to do this after the tornado came through,” Putman said. “We live about 300 yards from the school, and it was such a devastating thing with the damage and lives lost. I knew we had to help.”
An avid rodeo enthusiast, Putman partnered with the Kellyville Roundup Club to host a Friday evening fundraiser at the arena. The event featured barrel race and a silent auction, drawing around 150 participants and spectators.
“It was a good night,” Putman said.
The event raised more than $2,500, with proceeds set to be split evenly between the McClellan family and the Beggs Parent Teacher Organization.
Volunteers and organizers emphasized that the fundraiser was about more than just financial support- it was about community. Everyone expressed gratitude for the turnout and generosity shown throughout the evening.
The outpouring of support for the fundraiser was a powerful reflection of community spirit, as countless individuals stepped forward to help. The Kellyville Roundup Club generously donated their arena, while many others contributed items for the silent auction. NFR barrel racer Wenda Johnson not only made a special appearance to run her horse, but also donated autographed items for the auction. Organizer Mary Putman expressed her deep gratitude, wanting everyone to know how thankful she is for those who helped make the evening such a meaningful and memorable event for the Beggs community.
As the rebuilding begins, reminders of strength and unity can still be found in the most meaningful places. As Beggs continues to recover, events like this fundraiser highlights the resilience of the small community – and the willingness of neighbors to stand together in times of need.
