Morris Public Schools is expressing its heartfelt gratitude to the community following an overwhelming outpouring of support during the inaugural McKinley McGirt Memorial Teddy Bear Toss, held Friday night during the Preston vs. Morris basketball games.
What began as a memorial tribute quickly became a powerful demonstration of unity, compassion and Eagle Pride. Thanks to the generosity of Preston Public Schools, Morris students and the wider Morris community, a remarkable 1,253 stuffed animals were collected during the event.
“There are no words to express how thankful and lucky we are to experience Eagle Pride like we did Friday night,” school officials shared. “The support shown by both communities was truly humbling.”
Fans packed the gymnasium not only to cheer on their teams, but to participate in a moment that transcended the game itself. As stuffed animals were tossed onto the court, the scene became a moving reminder of how a community can rally together to honor a life and make a meaningful difference.
The teddy bear toss was held in memory of McKinley McGirt, whose caring heart and compassion for others continue to inspire those who knew her. Morris Public Schools said the event reflected exactly who McKinley was and what she stood for.
“McKinley’s heart will live on forever and bring comfort to so many children through this annual event,” the district said. “Each stuffed animal represents love, kindness, and hope – values McKinley embodied every day.”
The collected stuffed animals will be distributed to children in need, ensuring that McKinley’s legacy continues to touch lives well beyond the walls of the gym.
Morris Public Schools extended a sincere thankyou to everyone who donated, attended, and helped make the night possible, noting that the success of the event was a direct result of community support.
“This was more than a fundraiser or a school event,” officials said. “It was a powerful reminder of who we are when we come together.”
The district plans to make the McKinley McGirt Memorial Teddy Bear Toss an annual tradition, ensuring her spirit of compassion continues to shine for years to come.
