County Commissioners hear opioid grant proposal
By JOSHUA JACKSON REPORTER,

OSU Wellness program talks rehab, GED initiatives

The Okmulgee County Commissioner meeting on Monday consisted of discussions surrounding a number of county matters from vending machine services to a proposal for opioid abatement programs.

Tommy Gonzalez, CFO of Express Vending, pitched his vending machine service for county facilities, highlighting advanced machines capable of accepting credit cards and resolving some of the issues reported with the current vendor, such as issues with item disbursement, empty machines leading to issu- of several refunds.

Gonzalez emphasized 24/7 availability of the service and personalized stock based on location needs. After some questioning from the board, Commissioner David Walker asked that he provide more information while they consider.

Commissioner Erik Zoellner, who recently worked to pass resolution for a speed limit changes on 153rd Rd. now recommended the imposition of a new speed limit on 230 Rd. south of Hectorville Rd.

Citing responses from “several persons,” Commissioner Zoellner proposed a 30 mph speed limit to enhance road safety, with enforcement actions to be initiated following proper legal postings and sign installations, per Undersheriff Smokey Patchin.

Much of the meeting was dedicated to discussions around possible opioid abatement grant funding. The commissioners heard from Paul Thomas, representing the OSU Wellness Program, who spoke about some of the potential uses for the funds and deadlines associated with the application process.

“This puzzle came out of a pretty extensive effort to engage the community in what is believed to be important aspects of could be funded,” Thomas said, who said they initially tried to keep the amount under $150,000 but were encouraged to put together a budget wish list of $345,460.

The proposal addresses critical needs in addiction recovery, rehabilitation and support services. Thomas outlined plans for parenting programs in jails, peer recovery support specialists, and early GED training for incarcerated individuals.

With the application on Friday, the commission is to review and decide whether to take action on the proposal during Thursday’s meeting to end the month.

Additionally, the board approved various administrative actions, including January and February Officers’ Reports from the Sheriff ’s Office and one employment ceased in District One. Blanket Purchase Orders were approved as follows: District One – Cintas, $800; S&H Auto, $1,000; District Two – Cintas, $700.

Lastly, Okmulgee EM Director Jeff Moore provided his weekly emergency management report, citing multiple calls from residents with floodplain questions. The full report can also be found in this edition.
