Schulter ends season with regional tourney defeats

The Schulter varsity basketball program saw its 2023-2024 season come to an abrupt end last Thursday in Kiowa.

The Schulter cage squads dropped backto- back defeats to Fort Towson in the consolation quarterfinals of the Class B, Area III, regional tournament at Kiowa High School.

The Lady Bulldogs finish the season with an 11-14 record following a 46-40 loss to the Lady Tigers in the girls loser’s bracket contest, while the Bulldogs close out 2023-24 with a 14-12 record following a 47-39 setback in the boys consolation quarterfinal game.

In the girls regional consolation quarterfinal showdown with Fort Towson, the Lady Bulldogs came out of the opening frame with an 18-14 advantage and held a narrow 25-24 lead at halftime after being outscored 10-7 in the second period.

Fort Towson took a 3-point lead (37-34) into the final frame following a 13-9 margin in the third quarter, then outscored the Schulter ladies 9-6 in the final stanza to hand the Lady Bulldogs the season-ending 46-40 setback.

Macee Henderson led the offensive attack for Schulter in the contest, finishing with a teamhigh 18 points. Caidence Campbell closed out her high school basketball career with an 11-point peformance in the season-ending loss. Other Lady Bulldog scorers against Fort Towson were Payton Campbell with eight, Jenna Henderson two, and Makalah Hawkins one.

In the boys loser’s bracket elimination contest, the Bulldogs trailed by one, 12-11, after one and three, 2320, at halftime following Fort Towson advantages of 12-11 and 11-9, respectively, in the first half.

The Schulter gentlemen took a narrow 31-29 advantage into the final eight minutes of regulation after outscoring their opponents 11-6 in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs were unable to hold onto their narrow lead in the final frame, as Fort Towson took the stanza by an 18-8 margin to hand the Schulter gentlemen the season-ending 47-39 defeat.

Vincent Bess, one of three seniors on the team, led the way offensively for Schulter in the season-ending loss. Bess closed out his high school cage career with a team-high 14-point performance. Zalyn Vinyard joined Bess in double figures with 12, followed by Bradyn Brown with seven. Kenta Carder rounded out the Schulter scoring against Fort Towson with six points in his final high school basketball game in a Bulldog uniform.
