Dogs, Lady Knights earn wins in county cage battle

The varsity basketball programs from Okmulgee and Henryetta met this past Saturday evening at historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium in Okmulgee.

Each county school came away with a win in the county cage battle with the Henryetta Lady Knights scoring a 53-41 victory in the opening contest the team’s fifth of the season, while the host Okmulgee Bulldogs held on for a 63-57 decision in the nightcap.

Both county cage squads were back in action Tuesday with Henryetta traveling to Beggs for the final game of a 5-game, 10-day, battle with county foes, while Okmulgee played host to Seminole.

In Saturday’s girls county battle, the Lady Knights came out of the opening frame with a 15-11 margin, then outscored the host Lady Bulldogs 12-7 in the second period for a 27-18 lead at the intermission.

The Henryetta ladies pushed their lead to double digits – 38-24 – with an 11-6 advantage in the third quarter.

The host Lady Bulldogs tallied 17 points in the final stanza, while the visiting Lady Knights countered with 15 points in the frame to walk away with the 53-41 victory.

McKayla Greenhaw led all scorers in the county contest with a game-high 22 points. Allie Davis also finished in double figures for Henryetta on Saturday with 11 points. The remaining scorers for the Lady Knights in the county battle were Maddie Rock with five, Zoe Boatright and Raychel Morrison four apiece, Kassidy Lee and Jordyn Goodman three each, and Graci Lollis one.

The host Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by Daijah Ghoston with 11, followed by Cora Love and Mallory Rivas with 10 points each. Other Okmulgee scorers in the county meeting were Brylee Edlin with seven, Dalazia Hammon two, and Natori Yates one.

In Saturday’s county boys battle, the host Okmulgee squad led 18-14 after one and 33-24 at halftime. The Knights cut the Okmulgee lead to six, 46-40, with eight minutes remaining in regulation following a 16-13 advantage in the third quarter.

The scoring went back and forth in the final stanza with both teams tallying 17 points in the frame to award the host Bulldogs the 63-57 decision.

Okmulgee’s top scorer in the county battle was Jeremiah Harley with 16 points. Other double- digit scorers for the Bulldogs on Saturday were Allen Thierry with 15, Malakhi Baccus 13, and Jaxsun Fulton 12. The remaining points for Okmulgee in the county meeting came on three points from Issac Brand and two points each from Nolan Yates and Asiah Leybas.

Henryetta was led by Nick Hudson with 16, followed by Talon Weaver with 15. Other Knight scorers on Saturday were Will Perez with nine, Hunter Gobin seven, Skylar Greenhaw and Jacob Nail four apiece, and Nathan Nail two.
