Knights, Lady Eagles earn wins in county meeting

The Morris Lady Eagles and Henryetta Golden Knights walked away with wins during last Thursday’s county varsity basketball action at Morris’ Don Shoemake Sports Complex.

The host Lady Eagles held off a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the visiting Henryetta Lady Knights by a 4131 decision, while the Knights thwarted a comeback bid by the host Morris Eagles to take the nightcap by a 62-56 outcome.

Both county cage programs were scheduled to compete on Tuesday with Henryetta traveling to Beggs and Morris traveling to Kellyville. Due to hazardous road conditions caused by inclement weather this past weekend, those contests have been postponed to a later date.

The next scheduled action for both county schools will be Thursday at the 2024 Muscogee Nation Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee.

Morris is scheduled to compete at 7 and 8:30 p.m., respectively, on Thursday, while Henryetta is scheduled to compete at 2:30 p.m. (boys) and 4 p.m. (girls), respectively, on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles’ firstround foe on Thursday will be the Schulter Lady Bulldogs, while the Eagles will square off against the Beggs Golden Demons in their opening-round contest.

The Knights’ opening- round opponent Thursday will be the Preston junior varsity team, while the Lady Knights will open tournament play Thursday against the Wilson Lady Tigers.

In last Thursday’s girls county battle, the host Lady Eagles came out of the opening frame with a 10-3 advantage and led 20-13 at halftime after both teams put up 10 points in the second quarter.

The Morris ladies extended their lead to 28-19 after an 8-2 margin in the third period, while the Lady Eagles countered the Lady Knights’ 16 points in the final stanza with a 13-point total to walk away with the 10-point victory, 41-31.

Morris was led in scoring by the duo of Emma Duclos and Alexis Schell with nine points apiece. The other Lady Eagle scorers in the county contest were Fire Clark with seven, Asiah Barnett six, Taylor Phillips four, Rylee Whitaker three, Kaylynn Lukenbill two, and Lillian Giddens one.

Maddie Rock was the top offensive contributor for the Lady Knights, finishing with a game-high 12 points. Other Henryetta scorers last Thursday were McKayla Greenhaw with eight, Allie Davis three, Jordyn Goodman, Graci Lollis, and Zoe Boatright two apiece, and Casidy Bailey and Raychel Morrison one each.

In last Thursday’s county boys showdown, the Knights led by double digits (19-7) after the first eight minutes of action, then the host Eagles took the back-and-forth second period by a 19-17 margin to send the teams to their respective locker rooms with Henryetta in front by 10 (36-26) at halftime.

After the visitors escaped the third quarter by a slim 12-11 margin for a 48-37 advantage, the Eagles torched the nets for 19 points in the final frame. The Knights responded with 13 points in the final stanza to derail any comeback plans, walking off the MHS gym floor with the 62-56 decision.

Henryetta’s Skylar Greenhaw and Morris’ Race Casey led their respective teams in scoring with 26 and 22, respectively.

Talon Weaver joined Greenhaw in double figures with 23, while Xavier Harjo also reached double- digit scoring for the Eagles in the county battle with 18.

Other scorers for the Knights were Nick Hudson with five, Jacob Nail four, Nathan Nail three, and Will Perez one.

Other Morris scorers last Thursday were Tre Robinson and Robert Woods with six apiece and Trey Daniels and Koen Burgess two each.
