The Lord Delivers
By MARY MORRIS MEMBER OF HENRYETTA FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH,

“O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of me, there is no help for him in God. But thou, O Lord, art a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cry aloud to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy hill. I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me. I am not afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God! For thou dost smite all my enemies on the cheek, thou dost break the teeth of the wicked. Deliverance belongs to the Lord; thy blessing be upon thy people! (Psalms 3:1-8)” David had reason to be afraid through much of his life. As a boy, he was out with weather and wild beasts as he watched his father’s flocks. When Saul took him in, the king turned on him often, even casting a spear in his direction from time to time. David fought many battles, warring much of his adult life. Even when his autumn years were upon him, when he could have been kicked back and relaxed, Absalom came for the throne. Through it all, David knew hope, joy, love, and peace through the God he served so well and faithfully. His life could have been taken any number of times, but God was there to see to it David fulfilled his purpose in God’s name.
