Dewar begins season with road split
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Dewar varsity basketball program began its 2023-2024 season last Thursday in Council Hill, traveling to Midway High School to battle the host Chargers and Lady Chargers.

The Dewar cagers left the Midway gymnasium with a split decision, as the Lady Dragons dropped the opening contest by a 53-48 decision, while the Dragons salvaged the season opener with a 48-26 victory in the nightcap.

The Dewar squads were scheduled to travel to Schulter this past Friday for a county battle, but the contest was canceled for an unknown reason.

The next scheduled action for the Dragons and Lady Dragons was Tuesday evening at home against Hanna. The Dewar squads will also be in action this Friday with a trip to Butner.

In last Thursday’s girls season opener at Midway, the Lady Dragons trailed 17-12 after the first eight minutes of action, then both teams tallied 10 points in the second period for a 27-22 Midway advantage at halftime.

The host Lady Chargers extended their lead to double digits - 45-35 - after coming out of the third quarter with an 18-13 margin.

The Dewar ladies took the final frame by a 13-8 margin, but it was not enough for the season- opening win, falling by a 53-48 decision.

Tajaya Lewis was the top scorer for the Lady Dragons in the season opener, finishing with a team-best 17 points.

Other Dewar scorers against Midway were Marti Yaerger with nine, Lay-Lay Carter and Laynie Taylor eight apiece and Gracie Johnson and Cali Thomason three each.

In last Thursday’s boys season opener, the Dragons escaped the opening frame with a narrow 14-10 advantage, then outscored the host Chargers 10-4 in the second stanza for a 24-14 halftime lead.

The Dewar gentlemen took the final two frames by identical 12-6 margins to put the finishing touches on the season-opening victory, 48-26.

Stoney Yaerger led all Dewar scorers in the win with 17, followed by Skelly Taylor with 10. Other Dragon scorers at Midway were Jeron Brison with seven, Colton Thomason six, Tanner Wilson five, and Remy Martin three.
