Schulter routs Bokoshe in cage opener

The 2023-2024 season for the Schulter varsity basketball program kicked off on a winning note last Thursday night at Bokoshe High School.

The Schulter cage squads made the 94-mile (one-way) trip into LeFlore County to battle the host Bokoshe Tigers and Lady Tigers in the season opener.

The Lady Bulldogs began the road trip with a convincing 71-11 victory over the host Lady Tigers, while the Bulldogs capped off the season-opening sweep with a 69-39 decision in the nightcap.

Schulter returned to action Tuesday in its home opener against the Butner Eagles and Lady Eagles and are scheduled to travel to Hanna on Friday for a matchup with the Hanna Dragons and Lady Dragons.

In last Thursday’s girls season opener at Bokoshe, the visiting Lady Bulldogs took the opening frame by a 24-0 margin and led 40-1 at halftime after outscoring the Lady Tigers 16-1 in the second period.

The Schulter ladies blanked Bokoshe 23-0 in the third quarter for a commanding 63-1 advantage with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

The host Lady Tigers came out of the final stanza with a 10-8 margin, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to walk off the Bokoshe floor with the 71-11 decision.

Sophomore Payton Campbell led the offensive attack for Schulter, finishing with a game-high 25-point performance. Senior Caidence Campbell was next in the Lady Bulldog scoring column with 24 points, followed by sophomore Macee Henderson with 10. Other Schulter scorers in the season- opening win were Lexi Hurt and Jenna Henderson with four points apiece and KayLee Johnson and Olive Warren two each.

In last Thursday’s boys contest at Bokoshe, the Bulldogs came out of the first eight minutes of action with a 26-4 advantage. Bokoshe escaped the second quarter with a narrow 1613 margin to send the teams to their respective locker rooms with Schulter in front by 19 points, 39-20, at the intermission.

The host Tigers cut the Schulter lead to 15 (47-32) after outscoring the visitors 12-8 in the third stanza.

The Bulldogs put the game on ice in the final frame, outscoring Bokoshe 22-7 in the final eight minutes of action for the 69-39 victory.

Freshman Zalyn Vinyard was the top scorer for Schulter in the season opener, finishing with a team-best 16 points in his high school debut. Other double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs in the 30-point win were seniors Connor Hammon (15), Bobby Calhoun (14), Vincent Bess (14), and Kenta Carder (10).
