Demons come up short at Kiefer
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The playoff dreams of the Beggs Golden Demon varsity football program took a huge hit last Thursday night at Kiefer High School.

The playoff dreams of the Beggs Golden Demon varsity football program took a huge hit last Thursday night at Kiefer High School.

The Demons, who have appeared in the postseason the past 15 seasons, fell to 2-3 in district play last Thursday with a 68-6 loss to the host Kiefer Trojans.

The district setback puts the Beggs gridiron squad in a tie with Sperry for fourth in the 2A-7 standings with two games remaining.

In order for the Demons to keep their playoff streak intact for a 16th-straight year, they will need to come away victorious in their final two regular-season games - this Friday at home against county rival Morris and November 2 at Sperry.

In last Thursday’s district battle with Kiefer, the lone Beggs score came in the second quarter on an 8-yard run by senior tailback Red Martel that ended a 34-point offensive spark by the Trojans.

Friday’s county battle with Morris is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. at Tate Field at Golden Demon Stadium in Beggs.

Kiefer began last Thursday’s Week 8 showdown with a pair of 1-yard runs in the opening quarter by Jentry Pendergraft and Bradley Breland, while Jaxon Worley connected with Zack Watson on the conversion attempt following Breland’s 1-yard plunge for a 14-0 advantage.

The host Trojans added a defensive score in the opening frame, as Cameron Bowman fell on a Beggs fumble in the end zone to extend Kiefer’s lead to 20-0 after the first 12 minutes of action.

The first two Kiefer scores in the second stanza came on TD passes of 42 and 25 yards from Worley to Alston Carr and Cooper Shoaf, respectively. Carr crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt following his long-distance TD reception, while the pass attempt on the second conversion try was unsuccessful, pushing Kiefer’s lead to 34-0, midway through the second quarter.

Martel’s 8-yard scoring run made it a 34-6 contest, while the Trojans took a 40-6 lead into the halftime break following a 3-yard scamper by Watson in the final minute of the first half.

The first three Kiefer scores in the second half belonged to Pendergraft. The first score for the senior standout came on a 14-yard run in the third quarter to extend the Trojans’ lead to 46-6, then the 6-foot, 215-pound fullback blocked a Beggs punt and returned the punt 12 yards to paydirt later in the third period. Carr crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt following the special teams score for a 54-6 advantage for Kiefer with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

A 34-yard TD pass from Worley to Pendergraft began the fourth-quarter scoring for the host Trojans, pushing the Kiefer lead to 60-6, while Dakota Morris capped off the Trojans’ 68-point output late in the final frame with a 1-yard TD run and successful conversion run to hand the visiting Beggs Golden Demons the 68-6 setback.
