A slow offensive start to the Okmulgee County Tournament for the Dewar Lady Dragons put them in the consolation semi-finals Wednesday night. After facing a 30-point, 51-21, defeat to the Preston Lady Pirates, the Lady Dragons took down the Wilson Lady Tigers in a 76-23 battle. The Lady Tigers fell in round one to the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs, struggling to collect their offense in the first half and fell in a 57-32 battle.
The Lady Dragons had a strong start in the first quarter with freshman Maikya Carter scoring three 2’s and sophomore Gracie Britt fighting to the basket for a pair 2’s. Earning 16 points, the Lady Dragons also allowed the Lady Tigers to score six points. Britney Hartley scored a three-pointer to open the game, but Kenadi Tyrell was the only other Lady Tiger to make it to the basket for a two-pointer.
In the first quarter, the Lady Dragons took over the scoreboard with a 16-6 lead. They were able to double their lead in the second quarter with a 24-point scoring barrage. Britt and senior Skyler Randall scored a pair of 2’s, while sophomore Morgan Fry scored a pair of 3’s. Dewar senior Noelani Corbin assisted with the double digit scoring streak, earning a total of four points.
The Lady Tigers failed to pull themselves out of a scoring slump, resulting in a 40-15 lead for the Lady Dragons.
Corbin led a 21-point scoring streak in the third quarter. She busted out six 2’s and had the help of Fry and Randall to garner a 43-point lead. Fry scored a pair of 2’s, while Randall earned her third two-pointer and completed a three-point basket. Sieriah was the only Lady Tiger to score points in the third quarter. She made it to the basket for a two-pointer and also scored a free throw, but the Lady Tigers’ three-point quarter left them facing a 61-18 deficit.
The Lady Dragons mounted a 15-point attack in the fourth quarter to claim their 76-23 win over the Lady Dragons. Britt went on a scoring streak and added three 2’s to the scoreboard. Dewar freshman Maliegha Spears also scored a two-pointer to help the Lady Dragons earn their 53-point win. Hartley and Shelby Rader were behind the Lady Tigers’ last five-point stand.
Clinching a double digit win over the Lady Tigers, the Lady Dragons enter the consolation championship today against the Henryetta Lady Knights at 5 p.m.
