David A. Adler, American author of 265 books for children and young adults, celebrates his birthday of April 10, 1947, in New York City. Adler was one of six children in his Jewish family, and he wanted to be an illustrator because of his love for drawing.
David graduated Queens College in 1968 with a Bachelor’s degree in economics and education, and in 1971, he received his Master’s degree in marketing. He worked as a math teacher in New York City.
His first book, “A Little at a Time,” was published in 1976. In 1980, his first book with character Cam Jansen was published, “Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds,” and is still in print today. Cam was created in 1977, and after the first book was published in 1980, more than 50 more Cam Jansen Mystery books followed. Worldwide, more than 30,000,000 books have been printed and sold.
David is best known for his Cam Jansen mystery series, the “Picture Book of…” series and his books for children about the Holocaust. He has won many awards for his books, including the 2016 Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal from the American Library Association for his book, “Don’t Throw It to Mo.”
David married Renee Hamada, a psychologist, in 1973, and they have three sons. They live in Woodmere, N.Y.
