William John “Jack” Birlew Sr., a resident of Mounds and retired Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2026. He was born on July 22, 1937, in Pennsylvania.
Jack served in the United States Army beginning October 26, 1955, and was honorably discharged October 17, 1958. He was stationed in Okanawa, working as a radio operator.
Following his time in the military, Jack earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University. He joined the Oklahoma Highway Patrol in April 19, 1960. He served as a pilot for the OHP, initially flying their Cessna 182 for speed enforcement on I-40 with three other pilots. He retired on April 8, 1985. He enjoyed aviation for many years following his retirement.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Hazel (Newton) Birlew; siblings, Denny Birlew, Raymond Birlew and Betty Birlew; and former wife, Melba (Hubbell) Birlew. Survivors include his children, William John Birlew Jr. and Michelle Birlew; grandchildren, Joshua J. Birlew and Amber Culver and great-grandchild, Alexi Phares.
A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Tulsa, conducted by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Honor Guard.
