With tax season underway, area residents once again have access to free, professional tax preparation services through the AARP Tax-Aide program, offered in partnership with First Family Federal Credit Union.
Local coordinator and longtime volunteer Shirley McCowan, known by many as the program’s “tax prep guru,” said preparations for the 2026 filing season are complete, with all counselors having finished both AARP and federal training and certification requirements.
The free tax service is being held at The Briefcase building, located at 313 W. Main Street in Henryetta, and will operate Wednesdays only from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 8, 2026.
This year, the program will primarily operate on a drop-off system, meaning appointments are generally not required unless special circumstances arise. Taxpayers can pick up preparation packets in advance at the Henryetta Public Library, in the lobby of First Family Federal Credit Union or on Wednesdays at The Briefcase. The packets include step-by-step instructions to help residents gather the information needed for their returns.
Anyone with questions may call 918-268-8676 and leave a message including their name, phone number, and the reason for calling. Volunteers will return calls as soon as possible.
Organizers emphasize that the service is completely free of charge and open to all residents, regardless of whether they are members of AARP or First Family Federal Credit Union.
The impact of the program continues to be significant. During last year’s tax season, volunteers prepared approximately 350 tax returns, saving local residents more than $100,000 in preparation fees.
McCowan said the volunteers look forward to assisting both returning participants and new taxpayers each year.
“It is that time of year again,” she said. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again this year.”
The AARP Tax-Aide program has long been recognized for helping seniors, working families, and individuals who may otherwise struggle to afford professional tax services. Locally, the partnership with First Family Federal Credit Union and community volunteers has ensured the service remains accessible and convenient for Henryetta and surrounding communities.
As tax deadlines approach, residents are encouraged to gather their documents early and take advantage of the free assistance available.
