100 Years Ago (1926)

• Work on Henryetta’s new fish hatchery moved ahead quickly as crews led by Carrol Warren and Foley Smith cleared timber and large rocks from the site. The ground was nearly ready for plowing and dam construction, and volunteers were urged to give whatever time they could, even if it was just a few hours. With a tight deadline for completing the pond, organizers emphasized the community help to keep the project on schedule.

• Henryetta prepared for a lively basketball matchup against Ada, set to begin at 7:15 p.m. in the high school gym. The undefeated Hens hoped to protect their perfect season record, while Ada arrived eager for redemption after Henryetta had beaten them soundly during football season – Ada’s first home loss in two years. With that memory still fresh, both teams were expected to bring real intensity to the court.

• As Thomas Edison approached his eightieth birthday, he remained energetic, disciplined, and deeply committed to his work. Despite friends urging him to slow down, he continued his long‑held routine of study and invention at his West Orange laboratories. Known for his simple tastes, quiet habits, and lifelong curiosity, Edison still impressed visitors with his vigor and sharp mind. His friends, the Edison Pioneers, prepared to honor him as he entered another year of a remarkable career that had shaped modern life.

• Mike O’Neill, vice president of First National Bank in Henryetta, accepted a new vice‑presidential post with First State Bank in Guthrie. He had built a strong record in Henryetta through leadership in the loan department and active service in civic groups, including Kiwanis, local development boards, and the American Cancer Society. O’Neill and his family planned to relocate to Guthrie, expressing deep appreciation for the people of Henryetta and optimism about the community’s future growth.

• Mr. and Mrs. C.V. Ward of Henryetta announced the engagement of their daughter, Claudette Marie, to Gary Wayne Dwiggins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dwiggins of Bryant. Claudette was a senior at Henryetta High School, and Gary, a 1975 Weleetka graduate, worked for John Zinc in Tulsa. Their wedding was planned for May 17 at the Ward family home.
