Last week, multiple communities across eastern Oklahoma – including Henryetta, Cushing and Porter – experienced internet service disruptions after vandals deliberately damaged Optimum’s network infrastructure.
According to Optimum, individuals cut into the company’s network lines in search of copper, causing widespread outages for residents and businesses. The incidents occurred while many communities were still recovering from recent winter weather, compounding the impact on daily life and local operations.
In addition to affecting customers in Henryetta, Cushing, and Porter, the damage also disrupted service in Tulsa, as Optimum’s network supplies a partner network serving the Tulsa area.
— Public Safety Concerns
Optimum officials noted that infrastructure vandalism goes beyond internet inconvenience. Such damage can interfere with essential services, including 911 emergency calling systems, placing public safety at risk.
“These crimes disrupt vital services and highlight a growing challenge for service providers and communities alike,” the company stated.
— Statement From Optimum
In response to the incident, Optimum released the following statement:
“We sincerely apologize to our customers who experienced an internet service disruption yesterday. Our teams responded immediately and restored service quickly after our network was deliberately damaged by criminal activity. We appreciate our customers’ patience and urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.”
Company officials said repair teams worked quickly to restore service once the damage was identified.
— How Residents Can Help
Optimum is asking community members to remain alert and report suspicious activity near telecommunications infrastructure. The company recommends watching for:
• Unmarked vehicles parked near network equipment
• Individuals working near infrastructure without proper identification • Anyone who cannot provide official credentials or appears out of place If suspicious activity is observed, residents are encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
Reports can also be made directly to Optimum through:
• The company’s 24/7 chat support at Optimum.com
• The My Optimum mobile app using the chat feature These reports are forwarded to Optimum’s Security Operations team for review and follow-up.
— Ongoing Challenge
Copper theft and infrastructure vandalism have become an increasing concern for utility and telecommunications providers nationwide. Such incidents not only cause service interruptions but also create costly repairs and safety risks for communities.
Optimum officials say continued cooperation between residents, local authorities and service providers is essential to preventing future disruptions and protecting critical communication systems.
Community members are encouraged to stay vigilant and report concerns promptly to help safeguard local infrastructure.
