Matthew 27:3-4 – When Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”
Judas the betrayer made a choice that had consequences well beyond what he had assumed. And while he clearly regretted what he had done, he could not undo the forward momentum of what his actions began. Was Judas deliberate in his choice or was it just a rash act? It really does not matter for him but we could fast forward an interpretation of this account into our time for us. We may not be selling out a friend or family member, but the crux of the matter is that every choice we make has subsequent consequences, whether good or bad, now or later. By keeping our direct line to the Lord open 24/7/365 – that’s a prayerful attitude, folks – we are so much more likely to choose wisely in not only what we do but also in what we say. Our thoughts as well as our sights should always be heavenward where all is holy rather than earthward where it is all about self, for where we focus is where our heart lies. Judas’ focus was not for the future so his present ended ignobly in suicide and deep regret. Like Judas, we make choices.
