Okmulgee holds off Demons in county rivalry shootout
By TIFFANY BELL SPECIAL TO THE TIMES,

The Beggs vs. Okmulgee matchup has long been one of the area’s most familiar county rivalries, with meetings across multiple sports drawing strong crowds and vocal support from both communities.

Separated by less than 15 miles, the Demons and Bulldogs routinely face each other during the regular season, making each contest as much about local pride as it is about standings. Games between the two programs are often marked by physical play, quick runs of momentum and stretches where the crowd becomes a factor.

Friday night’s meeting at Brock Gymnasium continued that tradition, with both teams trading scoring bursts and responding to each other’s runs throughout all four quarters. The loud, energetic atmosphere reflected the familiarity between the programs and the stakes that come with a county matchup.

While records may change from season to season, the rivalry remains a consistent measuring stick for both teams as they progress through the schedule. Each meeting offers a chance to set the tone for the remainder of the year and reinforce county bragging rights.

The county rivalry evening got off to an exciting start with a JV matchup between the Beggs JV and Okmulgee JV boys’ basketball teams, setting the tone for an energetic crowd that would remain engaged throughout the night. Both squads showcased enthusiasm and effort, with coaches emphasizing fundamentals, teamwork, and positive reinforcement over the final score. For many of the players, it was an opportunity to learn the pace of varsity-style play, gain confidence handling the ball under pressure, and build chemistry with teammates, laying the foundation for growth throughout the season.

In the varsity matchup, the fans at Brock Gymnasium witnessed a fast-paced county rivalry Friday night as the Okmulgee Bulldogs held off the Beggs Golden Demons, 69-58, in a matchup defined by scoring runs and constant momentum shifts.

Okmulgee, playing on its home floor, improved to 1-2 on the season, while Beggs dropped to 3-3 despite several strong stretches that kept the game competitive into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs set the tone early behind Isaac Brand, who scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the opening quarter. Brand’s scoring surge helped Okmulgee jump out to a 14-7 lead after one, countering a solid start from Beggs that featured early baskets by Rickey Smith and Jordan Wesley.

Both teams traded momentum in the second quarter. Okmulgee leaned on its depth, with Larry Yahola scoring eight points in the period and Jamar Penn adding key baskets. Beggs responded with balanced scoring as Smith continued to find space inside while Wesley and AJ Estrada chipped in points. Okmulgee edged Beggs 18-12 in the quarter to take a 32-19 advantage into halftime.

Beggs emerged from the break with renewed energy. Bobby Baker sparked the Demons with seven third-quarter points, and Smith remained a steady presence as Beggs outscored Okmulgee 11-9 in the frame. Defensive pressure and improved ball movement allowed the Demons to trim the margin and keep the contest within reach as Okmulgee carried a 41-30 lead into the fourth.

The final quarter turned into an offensive showcase. Beggs continued to apply pressure, led by Smith’s seven points in the period and a late scoring burst from Trey Ross, who scored all seven of his points in the fourth. Baker Copeland and Estrada added timely free throws as the Demons chipped away at the deficit.

Each Beggs run was met with an answer. Yahola delivered six fourth-quarter points, Brand added four more, and Penn continued his consistent play with four points late. Chase Spain and Nolan Yates knocked down timely baskets, helping Okmulgee post a 28-point fourth quarter to pull away down the stretch.

Smith led all scorers with 20 points for Beggs, scoring in every quarter. Baker finished with 13 points, while Wesley added nine in a balanced effort. Ross’s late surge highlighted Beggs’ ability to generate offense from multiple contributors.

For Okmulgee, Brand’s early scoring set the foundation, while Yahola finished with 14 points and Penn added 10. Spain and Yates each scored eight, and Marcus Jeffrey Jr. chipped in six as the Bulldogs showcased offensive depth.

Coached by Cordell Love, Okmulgee relied on steady execution and ball movement late, while Beggs, under Koby Love, displayed resilience and familiarity typical of a county rivalry.
