Cornelia Caroline Funke, German author of children’s books, was born Dec. 10, 1958, in Dorsten, Germany. As a child, the oldest of four children in her family she dreamed of begin a pilot or an astronaut.
She studied pedagogy at the University of Hamburg and started working as a social worker with children from deprived backgrounds before becoming a book illustrator.
She was an established author in Germany and her first book to be translated into English was “The Thief Lord” in 2002. It was made into a movie in 2006. “Dragon Rider” followed in 2004. Her most famous books are “The Thief Lord,” “Inkheart” and “Dragon Rider,” all of which are New York Times bestsellers. “Inkheart” was made into a movie in 2008.
Germany’s “bestselling author for children,” Funke has sold over 20 million copies of her books worldwide translated into several languages.
Funke married printer Rolf Frahm in 1979, and they had two children, Anna and Ben. They lived in Hamburg for 24 years before moving to Los Angeles in 2005, when she came to take part in the film production of her novel “Inkheart.” This trilogy of books, “Inkheart,” “Inkspell” and “Inkdeath” caused New Line Cinema to buy film rights to all three books.
Her husband Rolf died in 2006 from cancer, and in 2021, Funke moved to Tuscany, Italy.
