MLK Jr. Weekend events announced

The Okmulgee community is gearing up for a meaningful and inspiring celebration as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee has officially released details for the upcoming 2026 MLK Jr. Weekend. With a slate of events centered on unity, service, and opportunity, residents are encouraged to take part in honoring the enduring legacy of Dr. King.

— Community choir invited to lead MLK service The annual MLK Service will be held Sunday, January 18, 2026, at St. Mathews Baptist Church, located at 1001 E. Chicago in Okmulgee. In the spirit of inclusion and community, the committee is extending an open invitation for both youth and adults to participate in this year’s MLK choirs.

The first choir practice was scheduled for Dec. 3 at 6 p.m., also at St. Mathews Baptist Church.

Choir organizers encourage anyone with a love for music and a heart for celebrating unity to attend. Participants will have the opportunity to learn both traditional and contemporary songs that will be featured during the MLK Service. No prior choir experience is required.

“All are welcome,” the committee shared. “Come sing, learn new and old songs, and help us prepare for a powerful celebration.”

—In addition to the worship service, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee will host its Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m. The event will take place at the Rowe Family Life Center.

Tickets are $25, and all proceeds directly support scholarships for local students.

The banquet has long served as one of Okmulgee’s most impactful community traditions, offering residents the chance to honor Dr. King’s legacy by uplifting the next generation. Funds raised each year help students pursue educational opportunities that may otherwise feel out of reach.

Committee members hope for another strong turnout and encourage individuals, churches, civic groups and local businesses to consider purchasing tickets or sponsoring students who wish to attend.

“This banquet is more than a meal – it’s an investment in our youth,” organizers emphasized. “Supporting this event helps us pass on Dr. King’s vision of opportunity, service and equality.”

As January approaches, the MLK Jr. Committee is working diligently to ensure this year’s observance reflects the values Dr. King championed: unity, education and community action.

Residents are encouraged to mark their calendars, participate in the choir, attend the banquet and help spread the word. Whether through song, fellowship or scholarship support, there are many ways to join in celebrating Dr. King’s profound legacy.

For additional updates and information, community members are encouraged to follow announcements from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and participating local churches.

The committee shared its excitement for a meaningful and memorable weekend: “We hope to see our community come together in a powerful way as we honor Dr. King and continue the work he inspired in all of us.”
