The Beggs Lady Demons opened their season Tuesday night in a packed, high-energy gym in Eufaula, battling through a fast-paced contest that ultimately slipped away in a 60-42 defeat to the Lady Ironheads. Though the scoreboard leaned heavily toward the home team, Beggs walked away with optimism, flashes of improvement and the sense that the foundation is set for a strong season under new head coach Vaughn Blankenship.
The atmosphere inside the capacity crowd felt like mid-season stakes, with both student sections loud throughout warmups and every made basket drawing a roar. Beggs fed off that energy early, pushing the tempo behind its athletic backcourt and matching Eufaula stride for stride through much of the first half. The Lady Demons pressured the ball, ran the floor and dictated the pace they wanted.
But Eufaula’s size advantage became the separator. With a significantly taller front line, the Lady Ironheads found repeated success scoring in the paint and controlling the second-chance opportunities. Even so, Beggs trailed just 15-11 after the opening quarter and remained within striking distance for much of the second.
The turning point came in the final minutes before halftime. Eufaula strung together a run fueled by interior baskets and a couple of timely defensive stops, stretching what had been a competitive single-possession battle into a double-digit margin. Beggs went into the locker room down 30-19, forced to play catch-up the rest of the night.
Still, the Lady Demons refused to fade. They continued pushing the pace in the third quarter, attacking in transition and looking for open lanes before Eufaula could set its defense. Kamya Stallings led the way for Beggs, delivering a steady scoring performance with 16 points spread across all four quarters. Her downhill attacks and ability to finish in traffic helped keep the Lady Demons within range.
Rylan Wesley added seven second-half points, including a strong fourth quarter, while Abigail Harmon chipped in six overall, finishing with a late surge of her own. Padon Stallings scored six, Mylah Williams added four and Emmbreah Triplett contributed three to round out the scoring.
Even as Eufaula posted matching 15-point quarters throughout the game, Beggs showed stretches of poise and control that stood out for a season opener. The Lady Demons played their best basketball late, winning several hustle plays, forcing turnovers and getting out into the open floor where their athleticism was most effective. Each quarter showed small but noticeable improvement – a promising sign for a team adjusting to a new system and coaching voice.
Eufaula’s consistent interior scoring remained the challenge Beggs battled all night, but the Lady Demons countered with speed, confidence and resilience. Though the final margin didn’t narrow, the play on the court suggested that Beggs is capable of competing with anyone when they dictate tempo.
With only one game now under their belt, the Lady Demons leave Eufaula with lessons learned, a clear sense of direction and plenty of encouraging pieces to build around. For a debut outing under Coach Blankenship, the signs of growth and the team’s fight from start to finish were exactly what Beggs fans hoped to see.
The Lady Demons move to 0-1 on the season, while Eufaula opens at 1-0. Beggs will look to carry Tuesday night’s progress into its next matchup as the schedule begins to ramp up. The Beggs Demons are set to compete in the Oilton Tournament, scheduled for Dec. 4-6.
