A Night Dipped in Gold

A Night Dipped in Gold
By TIFFANY BELL SPECIAL TO THE TIMES,

Fifty years after the legendary 1975 Beggs Golden Demons captured the state championship, Tate Field shimmered under the Friday night lights – literally. Beggs took the field in dazzling all-gold uniforms for the first time, a tribute to that iconic team and to the program’s golden legacy. It was a night steeped in nostalgia, pride, and pure dominance, as the Demons crushed the Coalgate Wildcats 56-19 in front of a roaring home crowd.

The uniforms weren’t the only thing gleaming. From the opening kickoff, Beggs played with the kind of fire that would’ve made the ’75 squad proud. In a storybook echo of that championship game, when Bobby Grayson famously took the opening kickoff to the end zone in 14 seconds, current return man Jordan Wesley did the same – fielding the Coalgate kick, following “flawless blocking and a burst of speed” he sprinted 62 yards to pay dirt in exactly 14 seconds.

Coalgate never recovered from the shock. Their first drive went backwards, and after a short punt, it took Beggs all of one play to strike again. Trey Ross, who had a night for the ages, bolted 33 yards for his first touchdown. Ross would finish the first half with just four carries – but an incredible 130 yards and three touchdowns, including an 81-yard sprint down the home sideline that left the Wildcats grasping at air.

The Golden Demons’ defense was every bit as fierce as their offense was explosive. For the second straight week, Beggs suffocated its opponent, holding Coalgate to only 15 total yards on 23 first-half plays. Sterling Jordan added an interception, and Landen Kelley came up huge with a fourth-down tackle for loss that sent the home fans into a frenzy.

When the dust settled at halftime, the scoreboard told the story: Beggs 48, Coalgate 0. Quarterback Ethen Davison was nearly perfect, completing 10 of 11 passes for 83 yards and three touchdowns. Seven different receivers caught passes, a testament to the depth and balance of the Beggs attack. Bobby Baker and Peyton Kelley each hauled in touchdown grabs, while Wesley added another through the air to go with his electrifying return.

By the time Kevin Monteque broke loose for a 52yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, the game was long decided – but the energy never dipped. Every player, coach, and fan seemed to feel the weight of what the night meant. Tate Field itself – named for Rodney Tate, a key member of that 1975 championship team – seemed to shine brighter under the lights. Alumni from that era stood along the track, clapping and smiling as the current generation of Golden Demons carried on the legacy they built.

After the game, head coach David Shannon summed it up best: “Our team was locked in tonight and wanted to represent our community and honor the 1975 team. We had a great week of practice and I feel like we continue to stack good days. I was very proud of the way we played efficient, complementary football in all three phases tonight.”

With two games left in the regular season, Beggs now sits fourth in the district standings, still firmly in the playoff hunt. But for one night, it wasn’t just about playoff positioning – it was about pride, history, and a golden tradition that refuses to fade.

As the final horn sounded and the players gathered at midfield to salute the old champions, one thing was clear: 50 years later, Beggs football still shines brightest in gold.
