“…I will wait for better times, wait till this time of trouble is ended. Then you will call, and I will answer, and you will be pleased with me, your creature. Then you will watch every step I take, but you will not keep track of my sins. You will forgive them and put them away; you will wipe out all the wrongs I have done. (Job 14:14b-17)” How we handle difficulties speaks to our faith walk. Consider Job, sitting there in the dust, scraping sores with a broken piece of pottery, after having lost literally everything and everyone except his wife. He was still clutching to what we may call faith, although his sin of fear and doubt was what put him in his current position. True faith lies in knowing ahead of time that God is watching over us, covering us in the shelter of His arms and sending legions of angels to help us if the need arises. True faith is what we see in a cancer patient who refuses to give up, no matter the prognosis. Or the grieving wife who does not shut herself off after the passing of her lifetime husband, but gets up and embraces and enjoys life with her remaining family. The world is full enough of sadness and pain and the task of adding to it is not in our job description. Whenever we are struck by grief, despair, or pain, we must not let that rule us, but instead go to our Lord in the deepest, most heartfelt prayer we can muster. Find comfort in His Holy Word. He will come. He will deliver. And we will be relieved.
