Beggs blanks Comanche in crucial district win
By TIFFANY BELL SPECIAL TO THE TIMES,

On a warm Thursday night beneath a painted fall sky, the Beggs Golden Demons made their longest road trip of the regular season count – and then some – shutting out the Comanche Indians 26-0 in a critical district matchup with playoff implications.

The 400-mile round-trip may have taken a toll on the offense, which struggled at times to find rhythm. But thanks to a swarming defense and a few timely plays, Beggs did more than enough to walk away with a must-have win.

The Demons set the tone early, with senior Jordan Wesley delivering a bone-rattling hit on the third play of the game, forcing a fumble that Daniel Houser quickly recovered. It was the first of several game-changing moments by Wesley, who also hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, picked off two passes before halftime and added a 47-yard punt return touchdown in the third.

Beggs head coach David Shannon praised his defense after the game: “I was really proud of the way our defense stepped up tonight. I felt like we had a great plan and our kids flew around on defense tonight.”

Indeed, the defense dominated wire to wire, holding Comanche to just 67 total yards – 38 on the ground and 29 through the air – while forcing three turnovers, blocking a field goal and recording six quarterback sacks.

Landen Kelley led a disruptive defensive front, tallying a sack, a fourth-down stop behind the line and a blocked field goal just before halftime. Trey Ross, Jason Nethon, Mike Lewis, Nate Cody, Easton Bradley and Kelley all contributed sacks, while Sterling Jordan and Wesley added the turnovers.

After Wesley’s first-half touchdown put Beggs up 7-0, he sparked the team again in the third quarter with a dazzling 47-yard punt return for a score. Later in the quarter, Mike Lewis broke off a key run to set up a 19-yard pass to Bobby Baker, who finished the night with 9 catches for 127 yards. Jason Nethon finished that drive with a 21-yard touchdown scamper to make it 20-0.

In the fourth, Davison found Baker again on a 31yard seam route, and Trey Ross capped the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run to seal the 26-0 victory.

Now sitting in fourth place in the district standings with three games remaining, the Demons control their playoff destiny. They return home next week for a meaningful matchup against Coalgate on Oct. 24 – a night that will also honor the 50th anniversary of Beggs’ 1975 state championship team.
