Demons dominate second half to cement Homecoming win
By TIFFANY BELL SPECIAL TO THE TIMES,

The Beggs Golden Demons gave their homecoming crowd plenty to cheer about Thursday night, overcoming a scoreless first half to surge past the Community Christian Royals 27-7 at Tate Field.

Backed by a physical run game, a breakout performance from backup quarterback Bobby Baker and a stout defensive effort, Beggs (3-1) put together a commanding second-half performance to secure the win.

After a slow start for both teams, the Demons came alive after halftime. Beggs racked up 351 total yards of offense, including a punishing 303 yards on the ground, and dominated time of possession with 19 first downs.

Bobby Baker, stepping in again as the backup signal-caller, proved to be the x-factor. The senior completed 6 of 8 passes for 48 yards, including a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Jordan Wesley that effectively put the game out of reach. Baker also made his mark with his legs, rushing 15 times for 114 yards, highlighted by a spectacular 38-yard touchdown run on 4th and 5 that slammed the door on any hopes of a Royals comeback.

Beggs’ ground game didn’t stop with Baker. Senior Jason Nethon carried the ball 18 times for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Trey Ross added 11 carries for 79 yards and a score, helping the Demons wear down the Royals’ defense as the second half wore on.

Defensively, Beggs delivered one of its strongest performances of the season. Sterling Jordan, Aiden Taylor, and Jordan Wesley led a unit that kept the Royals off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, when Community Christian finally broke through with a late touchdown – long after the outcome was decided.

It was a fitting result for a Beggs team that fed off the energy of a packed homecoming crowd and showed composure when it mattered most. Scoreless at halftime, the Demons responded with 27 unanswered points, out-executing and out-hustling Community Christian down the stretch.

The win not only gives Beggs a boost in the standings but also delivers a statement – even with a backup quarterback, this team has depth, grit, and playmakers across the board. The Demons move to 1-0 in district play.

Beggs will be on the road Oct. 3 to face defending state champions, the Davis Wolves.
