The Beggs Junior Varsity football team showed resilience and skill Monday night, coming away with a narrow 21-16 victory over visiting Okemah. The win was a testament to an aggressive offensive attack and a stingy defense that came up big when it mattered most.
Quarterback Baker Copeland was a standout for Beggs, throwing for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Copeland also electrified the crowd with a 60-yard kickoff return to start the second half, setting the tone for Beggs’ strong second-half performance.
Wide receiver Sterling Jordan was Copeland’s favorite target, hauling in two catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Josiah Hughes added three receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown, while Jayston Tennyson chipped in with one catch for eight yards.
On the defensive side, Kevin Monteque led the charge with seven tackles, including two for loss. Monteque also contributed on offense with four carries for 31 yards. Brody Drinnon made a key impact with a quarterback sack that resulted in a safety, giving Beggs two crucial points.
The Beggs defense was relentless in high-pressure situations, stopping Okemah three times on fourth down, including a critical fourth-and-goal stand that sealed the victory. Easton Bradley was a defensive force, recording six tackles, three for loss, and forcing a fumble.
“I was proud of the way our boys competed tonight,” said Beggs head coach David Shannon. “We had a lot of kids gain some valuable experience that will help us throughout the season.”
The victory improves Beggs’ record and builds momentum as they continue their JV schedule. With a balanced team effort and tough defense, Beggs showed plenty of promise for the rest of the season. Beggs will look to keep the streak alive when they travel to Kellyville for their next game on Sept. 15.
