Save Money, Shop Local

Okmulgee County residents are gearing up for a wallet-friendly weekend, as Oklahoma’s annual Sales Tax Holiday kicks off Friday, Aug. 1, through Sunday, Aug. 3. This anticipated tax-free event presents a golden opportunity for families to trim back- to-school expenses while patronizing neighborhood retailers.

During this designated period, certain categories of purchases – including most clothing and footwear priced under $100 – will be exempt from state, city, county and municipal sales taxes. This exemption applies to items intended for everyday wear, such as standard apparel and shoes.

However, shoppers should note that the exemption does not extend to accessories like jewelry, handbags or athletic gear such as cleats and football pads. Rentals of clothing or footwear also do not qualify.

Participation in the Sales Tax Holiday is mandatory for retailers across Oklahoma, ensuring that eligible purchases below the $100 price cap are tax-exempt, whether made in-store, by phone through catalogs or online, provided the transactions occur during the tax-free weekend.

Local businesses are poised to benefit significantly from this surge in consumer activity. The event not only provides substantial savings for families preparing for the school year but also bolsters the local economy by encouraging residents to support nearby merchants rather than seeking deals elsewhere.

For detailed information and FAQs regarding the Sales Tax Holiday, shoppers and business owners are encouraged to visit the Oklahoma Tax Commission’s Help Center at Oklahoma Tax Commission Help Center.

Here are some tips to maximize your shopping experience:

• Plan ahead by making a list of needed items.

• Verify prices to ensure individual items are under the $100 threshold.

• Shop early to avoid crowds and ensure availability.

• Retain receipts for verification purposes.

As Aug. 1 approaches, local retailers are preparing for an influx of shoppers eager to take advantage of the savings offered during Oklahoma’s annual Sales Tax Holiday. Whether you’re stocking up on school essentials or updating your wardrobe, this weekend promises not only smart shopping but also vital support for our community’s businesses.

Don’t miss out on the chance to save and support local retailers this taxfree weekend. Mark your calendars and shop smart!
