Vandals targeted the first entrance of the Okmulgee Lake Park Recreational Area near the boardwalk, causing significant damage, according to City Manager Rickey Peaerson. The incident involved destructive activities including performing burnouts in the parking lot, tearing up landscaped areas and driving recklessly through the recreational space.
City workers will now be forced to divert from routine maintenance tasks like mowing to address the extensive damage. The vandalism is considered the most severe incident that has occurred in the area.
Officials are calling on community members to report any information about the incident. Those with potential leads are urged to contact local law enforcement at 918-756-3511.
The senseless destruction comes on the heels of recent improvements to the park, including a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighting the frustration of city leadership over such destructive behavior.
Authorities are actively investigating the incident and seeking public assistance in identifying the responsible parties.
