David wished only to please the Lord, he wanted to build his God a house, and he had more than enough materials and workmen to complete the task. However, the king was told that his son, specifically Solomon, was the one to have the pleasure of erecting the structure because David had way too much blood on his hands. What may have been a most disappointing blow was softened by the words in today’s passage. But this wasn’t meant for David alone. How often have you heard someone lay blame on God when things aren’t perfect, “even though I go to church”? Sitting in a pew in no way qualifies one to claim kinship with the Lord. We must be engaged in the worship and follow that up with generous gifting of our time, efforts and funds. As a member of our earthly family, do we stand around with our hands in our pockets? Of course not! So why would we behave like that with our heavenly family, our Father? What does our scripture say in those first six words? “Then you will have success if.” If: It is such a small word but it packs a thunderous punch. We alone are responsible for our shortcomings, not God. He will always provide us a way to be successful and prosperous, but we have to do our part and, like David, follow the very clear instructions given to us.
