County teams climb OSSAA rankings

Several Okmulgee County baseball and softball programs continue to make their mark as the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) released its latest rankings for Week 5 of the spring sports season. The Dewar Dragons and Preston Pirates are leading the charge with top-tier performances, while Wilson and Henryetta also appear in statewide rankings.

— Dewar Dragons Baseball: Perfect and Dominant The Dewar Dragons baseball team remains the top-ranked squad in Class A, earning all 24 firstplace votes and a commanding 817 points. With a flawless 24-0 record, Dewar continues to prove they are the team to beat this season.

The Dragons hold a sizable lead over second-ranked Wright City (15-3) and No. 3 Ripley (18-1), thanks to their relentless offense and deep pitching rotation. Dewar has become a powerhouse under head coach Josh Been, whose squad has consistently stayed near the top of the Class A ranks in recent years.

— Preston Pirates Baseball: Top 10 in Class 2A The Preston Pirates are making waves in Class 2A, landing at No. 6 in the latest poll. With an 11-2 record and 405 points, the Pirates sit just behind Dibble and ahead of perennial contenders like Latta and Oktaha.

Under head coach Jimmy Hurst, Preston has played a competitive schedule and picked up big wins throughout the season, positioning the team for a strong postseason push.

— Preston Lady Pirates Softball: Among 4A’s Best

In Class 4A slow pitch softball, the Preston Lady Pirates are ranked No. 7 with an impressive 18-2 record and 376 points. Preston is one of only two teams in the top 10 with fewer than three losses, sharing that distinction with No. 2 Pocola and No. 3 Silo.

The Lady Pirates have maintained a dominant presence at the plate and in the field this season, emerging as a legitimate title contender in their class.

— Dewar Lady Dragons Softball: Soaring at No. 4 in Class 3A Not to be outdone by their baseball counterparts, the Dewar Lady Dragons are also making headlines in Class 3A slow pitch softball, ranked No. 4 with a 17-1 record and 417 points.

Dewar trails only Caddo, Tushka and Arapaho- Butler in the rankings and remains a threat deep into the season. Their balance of speed and power has carried them past tough opponents, and they’re expected to be in the mix for a deep playoff run.

— Wilson Lady Tigers Ranked in Class A The Wilson Lady Tigers crack the Class A slow pitch rankings at No. 18, holding a 7-5 record and 101 points. It’s a promising sign for the small-school squad, who continue to develop under head coach Taiah Proctor.

Despite facing tough competition, Wilson has picked up key wins that have helped them secure a spot among the state’s top 20 teams. Their presence in the rankings highlights the strength and depth of softball across Okmulgee County.

– As the regular season heads toward its final stretch, Okmulgee County fans have plenty to cheer about. With teams like Dewar and Preston excelling across multiple sports and Wilson making strides, the future looks bright for spring athletics in the county. Keep an eye out as these squads continue their quest for postseason glory.
