County teams set to kick off season
By PATRICK FORD NEWS EDITOR,

Several football teams from around the county are gearing up for their season openers, with some already having taken the field in their quest for victory.

The Wilson Tigers open their season this evening with a home game against the Strother Yellowjackets at 7 p.m. After a rigorous offseason, the Tigers are eager to prove themselves as contenders in the 2024 season.

Meanwhile, Coach Josh Been’s Dewar Dragons are preparing for their season opener at home against the Wetumka Chieftains tonight. The Dragons are on a mission to reclaim championship glory after a heartbreaking single loss last season derailed their bid for a state title. With determination and a strong roster, Dewar is looking to start the season on a high note.

The Morris Eagles also hit the road tonight, facing the Hartshorne Miners in what promises to be an intense matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Hartshorne comes into the game riding high after a dominant 47-8 win over Allen last Friday. The Miners, now 1-0, are hoping to keep the momentum going at home. For Morris, it’s a chance to begin the season on a clean slate after finishing 5-5 last year. The Eagles will be looking for revenge after a narrow 14-12 loss to Hartshorne in their previous meeting in 2021. Whether history will repeat itself or the Eagles will soar to victory remains to be seen.

The Henryetta Knights blasted into the new season with a 58-0 blanking of the Kellyville Ponies last Friday at Cameron Field.

This week, Coach Weston McGill and his squad will make the short drive west to take on the Okemah Panthers in what will definitely be an exciting matchup to watch.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned for Okmulgee in their season opener. The Bulldogs were overwhelmed by the Checotah Wildcats, losing 49-0 on their home turf. The loss marked their 11th straight defeat, continuing a tough stretch dating back to last season. Okmulgee will be looking to bounce back Friday night as they host the Mounds Eagles at 7 p.m.

The Beggs Golden Demons have a bye week as they get ready to prepare to host Henryetta on Sept. 13 at Tate Field.

With thrilling matchups on the horizon, this week promises to be an action-packed start to the season for county football teams. Fans won’t want to miss the excitement as the road to championships begins.
