Demons secure first victory with 20-10 win over Verdigris
By PATRICK FORD NEWS EDITOR,

In a gritty season opener at Tate Field, the Beggs Golden Demons clinched their first win of the season with a hard-fought 20-10 win over the Verdigris Cardinals. Despite facing statistical dominance from Verdigris, Beggs capitalized on crucial big plays that proved decisive in the game.

Beggs quarterback Billy Ramsey emerged as a key figure, delivering three touchdown passes that collectively covered 153 yards. His connections included strikes of 30, 43, and an impressive 80-yard bomb to receiver Ryan Grayson. These pivotal plays not only energized the Golden Demons’ offense but also dampened Verdigris’ momentum at critical junctures.

Grayson had four catches for 127 yards, and two touchdowns.

Ramsey was 11 of 16 for 203 yard, and three touchdown completions.

Statistically, Verdigris appeared to have the upper hand, amassing 16 first downs and 267 total yards compared to Beggs’ five first downs and 227 yards. Despite this, Beggs’ ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and make game-changing plays was instrumental in securing the victory.

Verdigris mounted a second-half surge led by quarterback Ethan Hushbeck, who passed for 134 yards and orchestrated a late-game drive that brought the Cardinals within striking distance at 13-10. However, Beggs’ defense, anchored by linebacker Carson Cooper and the overall team effort, managed to thwart Verdigris’ comeback attempts.

Cooper had a total of 17 tackles and three sacks.

Coach Tyler Blizzard expressed satisfaction with the team’s resilience and ability to capitalize on key moments in the game.

“We have a great group of young men who have bought into our vision for the program and we are going to keep improving,” Coach Blizzard said. “I’m excited for the rest of the season.”

The Demons have a bye week as they look forward to building on this momentum as they prepare for upcoming challenges in the season. They will face the Henryetta Golden Knights at home on Sept. 13.
