In the last few days, about 22 flags that were used to adorn 6th Street were taken, according to VFW Post 1189 Commander Guy Duckworth. There were approximately 35 flags that were being left up until the 4th of July holiday. A police report was filed, and a plea was issued to the community for any help in solving the crime.
After the input from the community, the Okmulgee Times and Henryetta Free-Lance jumped in to kick off a drive to help replace the stolen flags. One employee started the drive with the donation of a brand new flag, but area citizens also started asking how they could help.
On Wednesday morning, a donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, dropped off a check for $200 at the Times office to help with the drive. Times/ Free-Lance staff member Elizabeth Ponthieux was happy to present Commander Duckworth the donation. “I have renewed faith in people,” the commander said.
A box will be placed at the office where the new flags can be donated (preferably 3’x5’), or if you have a monetary donation, feel free to drop that off during business hours at 320 W. 6th Street. This drive will also seek to obtain the small flags that are placed on the markers at the Okmulgee Cemetery during Memorial Day. Any assistance is appreciated, and the newspaper staff and the VFW Post are especially grateful to all for their care and aid.
