This week, we’ll start with fireworks safety material essentials.
• Means to extinguish a possible fire - This can include such items such as buckets of water, garden hose and fire extinguisher.
• Use eye protection - Wear safety googles or glasses or even sunglasses. Also, wear close-toed shoes.
• Proper lighters. Use an instant-on torch or punks to light the fuse.
• Sober adult shooter. Alcohol (or any other mind-altering substance) and fireworks do not mix!
• Always brace cakes - Option 1: brace small multi-shot cakes with bricks or cinder blocks to prevent tipover. Option 2: brace cakes and roman candles with duct tape secured to stakes or rebar placed in the ground.
• Secure mortar tubes - Always nail or screw down launch tubes used for mortar shells to a sturdy surface. Bricks or cinder blocks can also be used to brace the tubes. Another option is a fireworks tube rack.
• Read and follow labels - Read and follow directions printed on each item. Light only one fuse at a time and never attempt to re-light a fuse.
• Use outdoors only - Fireworks must never be used inside, for any reason. Choose an area with no obstructions and pick a day with little or no wind.
• Use common sense - Fireworks should be handled under capable adult supervision. Do not point fireworks towards anything or anyone. Never place any part of your body over a firework.
Keep these fireworks safety material essentials in mind when enjoying your fireworks this 4th of July season. We’ll be back next week with some tips and tricks. Stay safe!
