The Henryetta Lions Club convened for their monthly meeting on April 18, at The Shack 2.0. Members present were Kim Donathan, Nita Robertson, Mylena Poulton, Bob Fowler, Amanda Ellis, Shirley McCowan-Bussey, Shannon Henry, Amber Mordecai, Starla Bush, Alicia Dudley, Sherri Crosby, Sheri Freeman, and Lindsey McKinney.
The meeting began with the Sunshine Report, where Lion Shannon shared the good news of her kitten’s recovery from a recent vet visit, while Lion Nita celebrated her grandson’s upcoming graduation and enlistment in the Air Force. Lion Starla added to the cheer with news of her new blue heeler puppy.
Lion Shirley took on the role of Tail Twister, engaging members with Lions past and present facts. Minutes from the previous meeting were approved, followed by announcements for upcoming events.
The club’s Next Bingo session, slated for April 20th at the Briefcase, was highlighted, along with a call for volunteers.
The Meal Mob for April was announced, featuring food trucks such as Sweet Southern Cakery, the Taco Truck, and Caffeinated Chaos, located near Cheezie’s on Main Street. Lion Shannon extended an invitation to the HYPE Spring Mixer at Rustler’s later that evening.
Members were reminded to settle their dues promptly and given the opportunity to order new Lion T-shirts and Meal Mob attire from Kate’s.
Lion Amber shared plans for a benefit Bluegrass Gospel Concert to support Hoffman Baptist Church’s roof repair.
Preparations for the Rotary vs Lions Kickball game on July 6 were discussed. Lion Amber is on the agenda at the next Park Board meeting, May 14th at 5 p.m. at City Hall. Members were urged to attend and support our Lions Club. Approval must be obtained to have the event at Nichols Park, along with requesting permission to have food trucks, vendors and use of the restrooms.

Lion Sheri Crosby proposed a fundraiser for a separate Scholarship Fund, garnering unanimous approval.
Lion Mylena initiated a motion for the Lions Club to donate $100 towards creating memory stones for students lost last year. The motion also received unanimous support.
Bob Fowler, Lion of the Day, welcomed the meeting’s speaker, Pam Timmons from the Hough Ear Institute, shed light on the club’s new initiative to collect used hearing aids, aiming to provide access to hearing aids for adults in need.
At the convention, it was discussed that the Lions Club is going to start a new project of collecting used hearing aids. They will have boxes for collections soon just like the glass boxes.
The Hough Ear Institute is a research and teaching institute. Hearing aids are expensive and they are trying to help adults over the age of 19 to have access to hearing aids or that might not otherwise be able to afford them. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover the expense of hearing aids.
According to Timmons, The Hough Ear Institute is actively researching new medicines and ways to deliver that medicine to the middle ear where it is needed. They have a new drug that they are hoping will someday be FDA approved. They have finished the first phase in the approval but need a pharmaceutical company to finish the second and third phase of trials. Key takeaway is to protect your hearing.
