British writer for children, teenagers and adults Mary Hoffman celebrates her birthday on April 20. She was born in 1945 in Hampshire, England. Her dad worked for the underground railway, her mother a homemaker and she has two older sisters.
As a child, her father took her to the library which was shaped like a castle every Saturday and there, she met a fell in love with all the Mary Poppins and Doctor Dolittle books. Mary studied English at Newnham College at the University of Cambridge and Linguistics at the University College London.
Mary married social worker Stephen James Barber in 1972, and they have three daughters, Sarah Rhiannon, Rebecca Imogen and Jessica Rowena. Living in a converted barn near Oxford, she has written over a hundred books; her first one, “White Magic,” was published in 1975. One of her bestknown books is “Amazing Grace,” which led to a series of books and then her teen fiction series Stravaganza.
Her hobbies include swimming, cooking and doing crossword puzzles. Her favorite color is green and she loves Indian food. She has three Burmese cats, Lorenzo, Lila and Lonza.
