“Thus says the Lord: ‘Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practice steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth; for in these things I delight,’ says the Lord.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24) We’re here for a purpose. Sometimes we may wonder what that purpose is, but that can lead down a rabbit hole so that our life can turn upside down like Alice’s did. Our purpose may not be one of great honor, glory, or wealth as the world perceives it. We may never be written into history books or have great monuments and memorials erected in our names. All these things will pass away in time and be forgotten anyway. But there is a greater investment in which we can entrust ourselves that will last into infinity: love and faith in our Lord. He has written for us a promissory note that, when we fulfill our part of the agreement, will bring us greater wisdom, wealth, and happiness than we ever knew existed. And what is our part? Simply to know the Lord, to honor Him, and to bring His essence into this realm with our acts of love, justice, and selflessness. (If you need a refresher course, try 1 Corinthians 13.) Since He delights in doing these things Himself and we are created by Him and in His image, doesn’t it seem reasonable that He would also delight in our acting on His behalf? It is in this manner we perpetuate His ideals so that, when we’re gone from this plane, someone who has been influenced by our faith and behavior will take up where we left off. And while they’re working here, we’re enjoying eternity with our Savior. And that’s what lasts!
