Eagles outlast Porter to snap 11-game losing skid
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Streak Broken!

The Morris Eagle varsity baseball team snapped an 11-game losing skid last Wednesday afternoon with a 17-15 victory over the visiting Porter Pirates The narrow 2-run win was the first of the 2024 season for the Eagles, who entered this week with a 1-11 season record.

The Morris diamond squad returned to action Monday at Beggs in a District 3A-6 battle with their county rivals, the Beggs Golden Demons, and were scheduled to host the Demons on Tuesday in their home-and-home district series.

The Eagles are also scheduled to host Tulsa Rogers on Thursday and travel to Henryetta Friday to complete this week’s 4-game schedule.

In last Wednesday’s home meeting with Porter, the visitors tallied four runs in each of the first two innings and added a run in the top of the fourth for a commanding 9-0 advantage.

The Eagles erupted for nine runs in the home half of the fourth to deadlock the score at 9-9 after four innings of action.

Porter pushed across five in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 15-9 advantage, while the host Morris squad tallied eight runs in the last of the sixth to take over the lead, 1715, with one inning of regulation remaining.

The Morris defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to award the Eagles their first win of 2024 – a 17-15 victory over the Porter Pirates.

The Eagles scattered 17 hits in the narrow win, led by Koen Burgess, who finished 4 for 5 with four singles and 2 RBIs.

Bobby Baker was next offensively for Morris last Wednesday, going 3 for 4 with three singles and 2 RBIs, while the duo of Lance Clark (2 for 4, single, double, RBI) and Gage Adkins (2 for 4, 2 singles, 3 RBIs) also recorded multi-hit games for the victorious Eagles with two hits apiece.

The remaining base hits for Morris last Wednesday came on singles by Karsten Powell and Robert Woods, RBI singles by Dakota Smith and Ty Woods, and RBI doubles by Hagen Hodges and Jaret West.

Powell earned the pitching win for Morris last Friday, allowing four runs on four hits with one walk, four strikeouts, and one hit batter in three innings of relief work. Powell took over with two on, no outs, and the score deadlocked at 9-9 in the top of the fifth.

Adkins got the start on the mound for the Eagles against Porter, giving up seven runs on three hits with two walks and three hit batters in just one-plus innings of work.

Robert Woods entered out of the bullpen in the top of the second with the bases loaded, not outs, and the Eagles trailing 4-0. Woods allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and two hit batters in three-plus innings of relief work.
