Dragons remain perfect with Wright City Festival sweep
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team improved to 11-0 on the year with a pair of victories last week at the Wright City Spring Break Festival.

The Dragons (ranked 3rd in Class A) began last week’s festival action with a 14-2 drubbing of the Fairview Yellowjackets last Wednesday evening.

The Dewar squad kept its season unblemished last Thursday with a 7-2 win over the Davis Wolves.

The Dragons had last Friday’s festival meeting with Christian Heritage canceled due to heavy rainfall in the Wright City area last weekend.

The Dewar squad returned to action Monday at home against Stuart and were scheduled to travel to Warner on Tuesday before competing in the Weleetka Tournament this Thursday-Saturday.

In last Wednesday’s rout of Fairview, the Dragons opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first.

After Fairview plated two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 advantage, the Dewar squad pushed across two runs in its half of the second and third innings for a 5-2 lead after three and one-half innings of action.

The Dragons put the finishing touches on their run-rule win with a 9-run top of fifth, then kept the Yellowjackets off the scoreboard in the home half of the frame for the decisive 14-2 victory.

The top hitter for the Dragons last Wednesday was Aidan Tomlinson, who went 2 for 3 with a single, home run, and 4 RBIs. Tomlinson’s home run came on an Inside-the-Park Grand Slam in the 9-run fifth.

Zack Mullen (2 for 3, 2 singles) and Nick Costanza (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) also recorded multi-hit games for Dewar against Fairview with two hits apiece.

The other three Dragon base hits in the run-rule win came on singles by Luke Hankins and Christian Cargola and an RBI single by Johnnie Wilson.

Wilson earned the pitching win for Dewar last Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks, four strikeouts, and one hit batter in three innings of work.

Skelly Taylor worked the final two innings on the bump for the Dragons, striking out three and hitting one, while giving up just two hits in the scoreless relief appearance.

In Thursday’s win over Davis, both teams tallied a run in their half of the first, then Dewar broke the 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth and added four in the seventh for a 7-1 advantage.

Davis managed just one run in the bottom of the seventh to award the Dragons the 7-2 decision.

Zack Mullen was awarded the pitching win for Dewar last Thursday, allowing one run on two hits, striking out nine, walking two, and hitting two in six innings of work.

Aidan Tomlinson gave up one run on one hit with two strikeouts in an inning of relief in the seventh.

Christian Cargola led the offensive attack for the Dragons against Davis, finishing 3 for 4 with three singles and 2 RBIs.

Tanner Wilson also had a multi-hit game for Dewar in last Thursday’s win with a 2-for-4, 2-single, performance.

The other Dewar hits in the 5-run victory came on singles by Johnnie Wilson and Peyton Kilhoffer, double by Tomlinson, and RBI single by Jeron Brison.
