Transit director is guest
The Henryetta Chamber of Commerce recently met, as members discussed various community projects and welcomed Charla Sloan from the Ki Bois Area Transit Systems.
Sloan is the director, and her visit shed light on the extensive services provided by the transit system, particularly focusing on transportation options for seniors and those in need.
“We provide public transportation,” she said. The Kibois Area Transit Systems cover 12 counties.
One of the standout services highlighted by Sloan was the provision of free transportation for individuals over 60 years of age to medical appointments, grocery stores, and more.
“It doesn’t matter if they’re a millionaire or whatever,” Sloan remarked, underlining the program’s commitment to accessibility and equity.
Sloan outlined additional services such as transportation for Medicare and Medicaid appointments, as well as the introduction of demand response services, making it easier for individuals to access essential services. The transit system also ensures safety and quality by employing drivers who undergo regular training and testing.
In addition to discussing the transit program, the board meeting addressed various community projects and initiatives. Members discussed the cleanup of Cowboy Park, plans for beautifying Main Street with uniform flower arrangements, and efforts to enhance economic development in the area.
One significant development announced during the meeting was the collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce, the city, and the Oklahoma Department of Commerce to evaluate local properties for potential development. This initiative, known as the SITES program, aims to identify the best use for these properties, potentially attracting new businesses and investments to the area.
Upcoming events include the Spring Fling and Cruise Night, the Spring Rodeo June 8; and plans for a Christmas village during the holiday season.
Also discussed during the Committee Updates were lighting projects, speakers for downtown events, a wrap up of the recent Chamber banquet and details on items that will welcome new residents and businesses.
As a reminder, the next Legislative Forum will be held Friday, April 5, at 12 noon at Shoney’s.
