Pirates outlast Prague, 6-1
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Preston Pirate varsity spring baseball team improved to 2-0 on the year Monday with a 6-1 road win against the Prague Red Devils.

The Pirates (ranked fifth in 2A) were scheduled to travel to Crowder Thursday for a meeting with the Crowder Demons and are scheduled to host county rival Morris at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The Preston squad was also originally scheduled to host Ripley on Friday, but that contest has been moved to April 9.

After Saturday’s county battle with Morris, the Pirates will travel to Varnum on Monday and compete at the Drumright Tournament next Thursday-Saturday.

In Monday’s road battle with Prague, the Pirates jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first two innings.

After a scoreless third, the Preston squad made it a 6-0 contest with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, while Prague tallied its lone run in the home half of the fifth.

Neither team was able to produce any runs in the final two innings of regulation to award the Pirates the 6-1 decision.

Easton Shaw went the distance on the mound for Preston to earn the pitching win, allowing one run on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Jayden Herring led the Pirate offensive attack on Monday, as the leadoff hitter went 4 for 4 with three singles, a double, and 2 RBIs.

Kaden Dean (2 for 4, 2 singles) and Bradley Winford (2 for 4, 2 singles, RBI) also produced multi-hit games for Preston on Monday with two hits apiece, while the other Pirate base hits against Prague came on singles by Kellen Dean, Waylon Cope, and Trae Stidman and an RBI single by Noah Wilson.
